In February 2001, Dr. Purshotam Lal achieved a groundbreaking medical milestone at Metro Heart Institute in Noida (Delhi/NCR) by closing a significant heart hole without surgery. The patient, Mrs. Pushpa Devi Batra, a 62-year-old woman from Alwar, Rajasthan, had suffered a severe heart attack and was admitted to the hospital. Her pre-existing hypertension had caused renal dysfunction, further worsening her condition.
A coronary angiography revealed a substantial 2 cm hole in her heart, along with a completely blocked right coronary artery and additional blockages in other arteries. Due to the patient’s critical state, Dr. Lal opted for a non-surgical approach to close the heart hole. This procedure was the first of its kind in India.
