Dr. Purshotam Lal successfully implanted a 24-carat gold stent to open the arteries of a 45-year-old patient, Mr. Narendar Kumar from Barnala, at Metro Heart Institute in Noida. This groundbreaking non-surgical procedure, the first of its kind in India, was completed in less than 30 minutes, resulting in a fully opened artery with excellent results.
Dr. Lal, who pioneered stenting in India in 1991, chose the gold stent because gold is an inert metal, reducing the chances of foreign body reactions and minimizing clot formation. Weighing less than a gram, the gold stent also significantly reduced the rate of recurrence.
