PULLBACK ATHRECTOMY

On June 9, 1996, Dr. Purshotam Lal conducted the first Pullback Atherectomy procedure in India at Apollo Hospital in Delhi. This pioneering procedure was performed on a 45-year-old male patient from Chandigarh who presented with a severe 90% blockage in his right coronary artery. The Pullback Atherectomy utilizes a specialized cutting device designed to remove fatty deposits obstructing arteries. During the procedure, a rotating blade within the device spins at 2000 rom under motorized control.

This action effectively chips away the fatty tissue, which is then
collected in a dedicated chamber before the device is removed. This innovative technique proved beneficial in managing complex cases of coronary artery disease, offering a targeted approach to alleviate arterial blockages and improve patient outcomes.
