Supported High Risk Angioplasty
with the Support of Cardiopulmonary Bypass

In October 1990, Dr. Purshotam Lal performed India’s first supported high-risk angioplasty with the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. The patient, a Colonel from Jalandhar, was considered high-risk due to severe left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. To mitigate this risk, the patient was placed on a Biomedica pump with oxygenation (Heart-Lung Machine), and the procedure was _ successfully completed. This pioneering approach marked a significant advancement in the management of high-risk cardiac patients in India.
