In November 1990, Dr. Purshotam Lal performed India’s first Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (TIPS)procedure on a female patient from Kolkata at Apollo Hospital. This procedure is particularly beneficial for patients suffering from liver cirrhosis and those in need of liver transplantation.
